Why does Canada prioritize economic-class immigration in its immigration system?

Canada gives strong priority to skilled and economic immigration because it helps fill labour shortages, supports businesses, and contributes to long-term economic growth. Under the latest immigration strategy, economic-class immigrants represent the largest share of permanent resident admissions, with Canada targeting nearly 62% of admissions through economic pathways by 2027.

The government uses programs like Express Entry and Provincial Nominee Programs (PNPs) to attract professionals in high-demand sectors such as healthcare, skilled trades, construction, and technology. These immigrants are selected based on their ability to integrate into the workforce quickly and support Canada’s evolving economic needs.
